The BMW Hurricane was a unique prototype completed in 1964, designed and built by students at the Palatine Technical School in Kaiserslautern, Germany. It was not an official BMW development project, but rather an independent and ambitious student initiative that was based on BMW’s technical platform and carried the company’s name. The Hurricane was built on the chassis of a BMW 1800i sedan, part of the Neue Klasse model series. It was equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing approximately 120 horsepower. Thanks to this setup, the Hurricane could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 195 km/h—an impressive achievement considering its unconventional origin.
In terms of design, the Hurricane was bold and eclectic, incorporating components from various car manufacturers: the taillights came from a Fiat 850 Sport Spider, the front indicators from a Jaguar XJ6, and the headlights from a Volvo Amazon. Unlike typical BMWs, the car lacked the brand’s signature kidney grille, giving it a completely unique appearance. Although the BMW Hurricane remained a one-off prototype and never entered production, it has endured as a rare and noteworthy chapter in BMW’s history—a testament to what can be accomplished through student creativity and engineering skill.
The scale model was produced by Autocult under the Avenue 43 series and is part of a limited edition, with only 333 units manufactured.
