BMW 502 Coupé was one of the most exclusive German luxury cars of the 1950s and a very limited-production special model in BMW’s post-war range. It was based on the BMW 502 luxury saloon, but received a coachbuilt two-door coupé body made to order, giving the car a much more elegant and individual appearance. It combined BMW engineering, a V8 engine and the craftsmanship of German coachbuilders.
In 1955, only 24 coupés based on the BMW 502 were built by coachbuilder Karl Baur in Stuttgart. These cars were hand-built to order and marketed through the BMW dealer network. This production method made the 502 Coupé one of the rarest and most exclusive post-war BMW luxury models.
The BMW 502 Coupé used a 2.6-litre eight-cylinder V engine, an important power unit for BMW. The BMW 502 was the first post-war German series-production car with a V8 engine, and the same technical basis was also used for the coupé version. The engine produced 100 hp and, together with a four-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, gave the car a refined and smooth driving experience for its time.
Compared with the regular BMW 502 saloon, the coupé was considerably more special and rare. Its lower and more streamlined body emphasised elegance and clearly differed from the more conservative shape of the saloon. The interior used high-quality materials, and the finish matched the level expected from a luxury car. The 502 Coupé was not intended for a broad customer base, but for buyers who wanted BMW engineering combined with a coachbuilt body and greater individuality.
The significance of the BMW 502 Coupé lies above all in its rarity and handcrafted character.
