BMW 1600 Touring (E6) kuulus 02-seeria perekonda ning oli esimene BMW katse tuua turule praktilise kasutusvõimalusega luukpärakereline sportauto. Touring tähistas BMW jaoks esimest lahkumist traditsioonilisest sedaanikujundusest, viies 02-seeria madalama tagaosaga, laia tagaluugiga ja suurema pagasiruumi modulaarse disainini. Disainilt järgnes Touring samale tehnilisele alusele, mis oli kasutusel 1602 ja 2002 mudelitel.
1600 Touringit toodeti aprillist 1971 kuni aprillini 1973, kokku vaid 4379 eksemplari, mis teeb sellest ühe haruldasema 02-seeria mudeli. Auto põhines lühendatud Neue Klasse šassiil ja kandis endas tüüpilist M10-seeria 1.6-liitrist neljasilindrilist ülanukkvõlliga bensiinimootorit (1573 cm³), millel oli toppsissepritse asemel kahekambriline Solex karburaator. See arendas 85 hj (63 kW) @ 5700 p/min ja pöördemomenti 118 Nm @ 3700 p/min.
Veoskeem oli klassikaline – tagavedu ja ees pikisuunas paigaldatud mootor. Standardkäigukastiks oli 4-käiguline sünkroniseeritud manuaalkast, kuid tehas pakkus ka 5-käigulist sportlikumat käsikäigukasti lisavarustusena. Vedrustus oli ees MacPherson-tüüpi ja taga pikkade õõtshoobadega sõltumatu vedrustus, millega saavutati hea juhitavus ja sõidumugavus – omas ajas eesrindlik.
Pidurid olid ees ketaspidurid ja taga trummelpidurid. Auto tühimass jäi umbes 960 kg juurde ja tippkiirus ulatus kuni 160 km/h.

The BMW 1600 Touring (E6) was part of the 02 Series family and represented BMW’s first attempt to bring a sporty hatchback with practical usability to the market. The Touring marked BMW’s first departure from the traditional sedan design, introducing a lower rear section, wide tailgate, and modular cargo area within the 02 platform. In terms of design and engineering, the Touring followed the same technical foundation used in the 1602 and 2002 models.
The 1600 Touring was produced from April 1971 to April 1973, with only 4,379 units built, making it one of the rarest models in the 02 Series lineup. The car was based on a shortened Neue Klasse chassis and was equipped with the typical 1.6-liter M10-series inline-four overhead camshaft petrol engine (1573 cm³), fitted with a two-barrel Solex carburetor instead of fuel injection. It developed 85 horsepower (63 kW) at 5700 rpm and 118 Nm of torque at 3700 rpm.
The drivetrain was a classic setup – rear-wheel drive with a longitudinally mounted front engine. The standard transmission was a 4-speed synchronized manual gearbox, although a 5-speed sport manual was also available as a factory option. Suspension consisted of MacPherson struts at the front and independent rear suspension with semi-trailing arms, offering excellent handling and ride comfort – considered advanced for its time.
The braking system featured front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The car had an approximate curb weight of 960 kg, and its top speed reached up to 160 km/h.
