While the M3’s widened arches and competition-oriented stance clearly pointed towards the racetrack, the B6 3.5 appeared more like a fast and confident road car. This was a very typical Alpina approach: performance did not necessarily have to be loud, but could be expressed in a refined way.
The same philosophy continued inside the car. Alpina added sporting and exclusive details, but the car did not lose its everyday usability. The engine had a displacement of 3430 cm³, and Alpina made several modifications to it, including changes to the cylinder head, combustion chambers, pistons, camshaft and exhaust system. The result was an engine that offered very strong reserves of power for the small E30 body.
The version without a catalytic converter produced 261 hp, while the version with a catalytic converter produced 254 hp. This was a very impressive figure for a compact BMW of the mid-1980s. Equally important, however, was the character of the engine: the large straight-six offered strong and smooth acceleration, very different from the high-revving four-cylinder character of the BMW M3.
The B6 3.5 also received typical Alpina suspension and brake upgrades. The suspension was made sportier, Bilstein components were used and the braking system was strengthened. Alpina’s characteristic 16-inch wheels were also part of the package. The special nature of the B6 3.5 therefore did not lie only in its larger engine — the whole car was retuned into a more complete and more powerful sporting model.

Production of the BMW Alpina B6 3.5 began in August 1984 and lasted until December 1990. Only 219 cars were built, making it a very rare Alpina model. The low production number was due to the car’s price, technical specialness and Alpina’s more hand-built and limited production character.

This makes the model especially valued today, as it combines the well-known body of the BMW E30 era with Alpina’s technical boldness from an earlier period.
