Background
BMW 750Li (G12) was one of the most luxurious and powerful versions of the sixth-generation BMW 7 Series, introduced in 2015. The G12 designation identified the long-wheelbase model, offering additional space and comfort for rear-seat passengers compared with the standard G11. The new 7 Series combined elegant styling, innovative lightweight construction and advanced electronics with the sporting driving characteristics traditionally associated with BMW.
Innovative Carbon Core
One of the most important technical innovations of the new 7 Series was its Carbon Core body structure. BMW combined carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, aluminium and steel in key structural areas, reducing weight while increasing body rigidity. Together with other lightweight construction measures, this enabled the new 7 Series to weigh up to 130 kilograms less than its predecessor, contributing to improved handling and efficiency.
450 hp twin-turbocharged V8
The original BMW 750Li was powered by a 4,395 cm³ twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine from the N63 family, producing 450 hp and 650 Nm of torque. Its advanced technology included two twin-scroll turbochargers, direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. Strong torque delivery from low engine speeds provided smooth and effortless acceleration.
4.7 seconds
Despite its extended body and extensive luxury equipment, the BMW 750Li delivered impressive performance. The original rear-wheel-drive version accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and reached an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Its eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission provided exceptionally smooth power delivery. Two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers combined outstanding ride comfort with precise handling.
Luxury for rear-seat passengers
The principal advantage of the long-wheelbase G12 was its spacious passenger compartment, particularly in the rear. The optional Executive Lounge package transformed the rear seating area into a luxurious environment for relaxation or work. Available features included electrically adjustable seats with massage functions, a footrest and the removable BMW Touch Command tablet. Other luxury options included the Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof and a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
A new generation of technology
The sixth-generation 7 Series introduced several remarkable technological innovations. BMW Gesture Control allowed selected infotainment functions to be operated using hand movements, while the updated iDrive system featured a touchscreen display. Other available technologies included BMW Laserlight headlights and Remote Control Parking, which allowed the driver to manoeuvre a suitably equipped vehicle into a tight parking space from outside the car using the BMW Display Key.
Further development and model update
The G11/G12 generation entered production in 2015 and received an extensive model update in 2019. The changes included a redesigned front end, interior improvements and an updated engine range. As part of the update, the V8 engine in the 750Li xDrive received a substantial increase in output to 530 hp, accompanied by 750 Nm of torque. Production of the generation continued until 2022, when it was succeeded by the new G70 7 Series.
Production and historical significance
The principal production location of the BMW 750Li was BMW Plant Dingolfing in Germany. According to published production statistics, a total of 348,754 G11/G12-generation cars were manufactured between 2015 and 2022. This figure includes all engine versions and both wheelbase variants, rather than the 750Li alone. The G12 combined the traditional qualities of a long-wheelbase executive saloon with BMW’s latest lightweight construction and digital technologies.
