BMW X6 xDrive50i (E71)

Background

BMW X6 xDrive50i (E71) was the most powerful version in the original first-generation X6 range and the car that introduced BMW’s entirely new Sports Activity Coupé concept. The X6 made its world premiere at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2008, with European sales beginning that May. The new model combined the powerful presence of a large SUV with a sporting coupé roofline and the driving dynamics traditionally associated with BMW.

The world’s first Sports Activity Coupé

The BMW X6 shared much of its engineering with the second-generation X5 but featured a considerably more sporting exterior design. Its long bonnet, sloping roofline, muscular wheel arches and powerful rear end gave it a distinctive identity. Unlike the conventional X5, the original X6 was initially configured as a four-seater with two individual rear seats. Despite its coupé-style body, it retained a large tailgate and a luggage compartment offering between 570 and 1,450 litres of capacity.

A new generation of twin-turbocharged V8

The most important technical innovation of the BMW X6 xDrive50i was its 4,395 cm³ N63 V8 petrol engine. It was the world’s first series-production eight-cylinder petrol engine with its turbochargers and catalytic converters positioned between the two cylinder banks. This compact arrangement improved engine response and helped deliver substantial torque from low engine speeds. Producing 407 hp and 600 Nm, the xDrive50i was the most powerful version in the original X6 range.

Dynamic Performance Control

The X6 was the first production vehicle in the world to feature Dynamic Performance Control. Working together with intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive, the system distributed torque not only between the front and rear axles but also individually between the left and right rear wheels. During cornering, additional torque could be directed to the outside rear wheel, improving agility and reducing understeer. This technology played an important role in giving the large X6 the sporting handling characteristics expected from a BMW.

5.4 seconds

Despite its substantial dimensions, the X6 xDrive50i delivered impressive performance. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds and reached an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The original model featured a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles as standard. Official combined fuel consumption was 12.5 litres per 100 kilometres under the European test cycle used at the time.

Further development of the X6 family

The X6 range expanded rapidly. In 2009, BMW introduced the ActiveHybrid X6 and the first BMW X6 M, powered by a 555 hp 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8. The X6 received a model update in 2012, bringing revised exterior styling and additional equipment. The xDrive50i retained its 407 hp V8 engine, while an eight-speed automatic transmission was introduced during the model’s production life.

Nearly 260,000 cars sold

The first-generation BMW X6 E71 was produced from 2008 to 2014 at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA. According to BMW’s official figures, worldwide sales of the first-generation X6 reached nearly 260,000 cars. Its success demonstrated substantial demand for a vehicle combining the characteristics of a large SUV and a sporting coupé. The X6 established a new direction within the BMW range, later continued by subsequent X6 generations and the smaller X4.

Model in the collection

The BMW X6 xDrive50i (E71) in my collection was produced by Schuco. It represents the original first-generation X6 introduced in 2008. Although the model was marketed under the general BMW X6 designation, the badge on its front door indicates the xDrive50i version. It is a limited-edition model, with a total production run of 1,500 examples.
