Background
BMW X5 4.4i (E53) was the original version of BMW’s first X model and the car that introduced the brand to an entirely new market segment in 1999. The X5 made its world premiere at the Detroit Motor Show in January, with production and sales beginning that September. BMW deliberately called the new model a Sports Activity Vehicle, or SAV, emphasising its sporting character and car-like handling. The X5 combined an elevated driving position, all-wheel drive and a practical body with the driving pleasure traditionally associated with BMW.
BMW’s first Sports Activity Vehicle
Unlike many conventional off-road vehicles of its era, the X5 was developed with on-road driving dynamics as a priority. It featured a self-supporting body, independent suspension and an all-wheel-drive system that directed more power to the rear wheels. Its muscular yet elegant styling, prominent kidney grille and wide track gave it a distinctive BMW identity. The X5 established the foundation for the entire BMW X family, which later expanded to include the X3, X1 and numerous other models.
4.4-litre V8
The first BMW X5 reached the market with a 4.4-litre V8 engine. The M62B44TU power unit was already familiar from BMW’s 5 Series and 7 Series models. With a displacement of 4,398 cm³, it produced 286 hp at 5,400 rpm and 440 Nm of torque. Power was transmitted to all four wheels through a five-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, fitted as standard to the V8 version.
Sporting all-wheel drive
The original X5 featured permanent all-wheel drive, distributing power between the front and rear axles in a 38:62 ratio. This rear-biased arrangement helped retain BMW’s characteristic driving dynamics. The system was complemented by Dynamic Stability Control, Automatic Differential Brake and Hill Descent Control. Together, these technologies combined excellent on-road handling with sufficient traction for more challenging driving conditions.
7.5 seconds
The BMW X5 4.4i accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. Standard top speed was approximately 207 km/h, increasing to 230 km/h with the appropriate Sports Package. These figures were impressive for a large all-wheel-drive vehicle weighing approximately 2,095 kilograms. The X5 demonstrated that a practical vehicle with an elevated body could also deliver the performance associated with a sporting BMW.
The 2003 model update
The X5 received a comprehensive update in 2003, bringing revised front-end styling, new headlights and numerous technical improvements. The original V8 was replaced by the new N62B44 engine, increasing output to 320 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission was introduced, while the original all-wheel-drive system was replaced by intelligent BMW xDrive. The X5 4.4i remained in production after the update until the first generation was discontinued in 2006.
124,800 cars
Production of the first-generation BMW X5 began in September 1999 at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the United States. The very first X5 built there was a Pearl Beige example powered by the 4.4-litre V8. According to BMW Group Classic, a total of 124,800 X5 4.4i models were produced between 1999 and 2006, including both the original and updated versions. The success of the X5 established the foundation for the subsequent expansion of the BMW X Series.
