Background
BMW XM Label Red (G09) was introduced in 2023 as the most powerful version of the BMW XM model family. The XM itself was a highly significant model for BMW M GmbH, as it was the first standalone BMW M model developed independently by BMW M since the legendary BMW M1, and at the same time the first high-performance BMW M automobile to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Label Red took this concept even further by increasing both system output and torque while adding distinctive red design accents. The model made its world debut in April 2023 at Auto Shanghai, and production began in August of the same year at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States.
Design and concept
Even in standard form, the BMW XM was one of the boldest and most extroverted designs in BMW M history, and the Label Red emphasised this character even further. Large illuminated kidney grilles, very slim headlights, massive body surfaces and vertically stacked exhaust outlets gave the car a completely distinctive appearance. What mainly distinguished the Label Red from the standard XM were Toronto Red metallic accents used around the side graphic strip, the model badges and wheel details. Red elements also continued into the interior, where the black base colour was complemented by contrast stitching, red seat details and special XM accents. Customers could also choose a black exterior accent strip instead of the red one.
M HYBRID powertrain
The BMW XM Label Red used the M HYBRID plug-in hybrid system, in which a 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine worked together with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The V8 produced up to 585 hp, while the electric motor contributed up to 197 hp, resulting in a combined system output of 748 hp, or 550 kW. Maximum system torque was an impressive 1,000 Nm. Power was sent to all four wheels through the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which retained a rear-biased setup for a more sporting driving character. An electronically controlled M Sport differential and chassis tuning specifically adapted for the Label Red helped the large and heavy vehicle deliver the dynamic character expected of a BMW M model.
Performance
Despite its size, the BMW XM Label Red accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. In standard form, top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h, but the optional M Driver’s Package raised this limit to 290 km/h. These figures made the Label Red the most powerful series-production BMW M road model at the time of its launch and one of the most powerful series-production plug-in hybrid SUVs available.
Electric driving
Although the main focus of the BMW XM Label Red was performance, its plug-in hybrid system also allowed the car to be driven purely on electric power. The high-voltage battery had a usable energy content of 25.7 kWh, and the official WLTP electric driving range was approximately 75 to 83 kilometres, depending on specification. In electric mode, the car could reach speeds of up to 140 km/h. The electric motor was therefore not merely an additional performance component, but also made it possible to complete shorter everyday journeys without using the V8 petrol engine.
Label Red and the limited Edition
The BMW XM Label Red itself was not a fixed-number limited-production model. Alongside it, however, BMW also offered a particularly exclusive BMW XM Label Red Edition, limited to 500 cars worldwide. The Edition featured BMW Individual Frozen Carbon Black metallic paint, especially striking Toronto Red metallic details around the kidney grille and rear diffuser, and an interior badge reading “1 of 500”. For that reason, it is important to distinguish between the standard XM Label Red and the separate 500-unit Label Red Edition.
Significance in BMW M history
The BMW XM Label Red represented a very different approach for BMW M compared with traditional models such as the M3 or M5. It combined the body of a large luxury Sports Activity Vehicle with an electrified powertrain and extraordinarily high system output, showing the direction in which BMW M was beginning to use electrification in high-performance vehicles. At the same time, the XM is important because it was not simply an M version of an existing BMW series model, but an independent BMW M GmbH project. The Label Red was the most powerful original interpretation of this concept, and with 748 hp it set a new output benchmark for BMW M production models at the time of its introduction.
Model in the collection
The model in my collection was produced by Minichamps and represents a 2023 BMW XM Label Red. Finished in matte black with red details, the model is a limited edition of only 336 examples.
