Background
BMW 435i Coupé (F32) was one of the original models of the new BMW 4 Series, introduced in 2013 as the successor to the 3 Series Coupé. The new model designation allowed BMW to distinguish its two-door sporting models more clearly from the 3 Series saloon and Touring. The 435i was one of the most powerful petrol versions in the range and continued BMW’s long tradition of combining an elegant coupé body with a strong straight-six engine.
The birth of the 4 Series
Although the F32 succeeded the 3 Series Coupé, BMW deliberately gave the new model a more distinctive and sporting character. Compared with its predecessor, it had a longer wheelbase, wider body and lower roofline. Its centre of gravity was below 500 millimetres and, at launch, was the lowest of any current BMW production model. Long doors, frameless side windows, a long bonnet and a set-back passenger compartment retained the classic proportions of a BMW coupé.
3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six
The 435i was powered by a 2,979 cm³ BMW TwinPower Turbo straight-six engine. Direct injection, VALVETRONIC, Double-VANOS and a twin-scroll turbocharger helped it produce 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque, available from just 1,200 rpm. The engine combined strong low-rev performance with the smoothness and sporting character traditionally associated with BMW straight-six engines.
Up to 250 km/h
The rear-wheel-drive BMW 435i Coupé accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox and 5.1 seconds with the eight-speed Sport automatic. The xDrive version could achieve the same sprint in 4.9 seconds. Top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h. The 435i was available with either traditional rear-wheel drive or BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
Sporting but practical
The F32 was designed to combine performance with everyday usability. Its four-seat interior, useful luggage space and selectable driving modes made the 435i suitable for daily driving as well as longer journeys. A lower suspension, wider track and Coupé-specific chassis tuning distinguished the 4 Series from the regular 3 Series. Sport, Luxury and M Sport versions were offered, together with options such as Adaptive M suspension.
From 435i to 440i
The 435i remained in the F32 range until 2016. With the introduction of BMW’s new generation of engines it was replaced by the BMW 440i, powered by the newer B58 3.0-litre straight-six with increased output. Technical specifications for the 440i applied from March 2016. The 435i therefore represents the original six-cylinder petrol flagship of the first F32 4 Series below the M4.
Historical significance
The BMW 435i marked an important change in BMW’s model nomenclature. Technically it continued the tradition established by earlier 3 Series Coupés, but the F32 firmly established the 4 Series as a separate coupé model family. With its straight-six engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and the continued availability of a manual transmission, the 435i represents an interesting bridge between the traditional BMW sports coupé and the modern 4 Series.
