BMW X5 xDrive30d (F15)

Background

BMW X5 xDrive30d (F15) was one of the key diesel versions of the third-generation X5, combining the practicality of a large luxury Sports Activity Vehicle with the performance and efficiency of a six-cylinder diesel engine. The new X5 was unveiled in May 2013, with production beginning that August. Compared with its predecessor, the F15 introduced more elegant styling, a more refined interior and advanced technology while retaining BMW’s characteristic sporting handling.

3.0-litre straight-six turbodiesel

The BMW X5 xDrive30d was powered by a 2,993 cm³ N57 straight-six turbodiesel, producing 258 hp at 4,000 rpm and 560 Nm of torque. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology combined a variable-geometry turbocharger with common-rail direct injection. Strong torque at low engine speeds made the car particularly suitable for everyday use and comfortable long-distance driving.

6.9 seconds

Despite its substantial size and all-wheel-drive system, the X5 xDrive30d offered impressive performance. The original version accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and reached a top speed of 230 km/h. Its eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission provided smooth power delivery while helping to reduce fuel consumption. BMW’s original official combined consumption figure was 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres under the test cycle used at the time.

Intelligent xDrive

The X5 xDrive30d featured intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive, continuously distributing power between the front and rear axles according to driving conditions. Working together with Dynamic Stability Control, the system improved both traction and handling. Various optional adaptive suspension systems were available, including electronically controlled dampers and active roll stabilisation.

Greater comfort and technology

The third-generation X5 introduced a more luxurious interior and an extensive range of comfort and driver assistance technologies. Available equipment included a Head-Up Display, an improved BMW iDrive system and numerous BMW ConnectedDrive functions. Luggage capacity was 650 litres, increasing to 1,870 litres with the rear seats folded. An optional third row of seats was also available.

The success of the third-generation X5

The BMW X5 F15 was produced from 2013 to 2018 at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA. According to BMW’s official figures, worldwide sales of the third-generation X5 reached nearly 760,000 cars. The X5 xDrive30d was an important six-cylinder diesel version of the range, combining luxury, long-distance efficiency and strong performance. BMW has not published a separate production figure for the xDrive30d.
