Bauri peadisainer Hermann Wenzelburger esitles 1971. aasta alguses uut turvakaarega kabriolettlahendust.
BMW 2002 Baur Top Cabrioleti tähtsus seisneb selles, et see hoidis avatud 02-seeria idee elus ajal, mil täiskabrioleti tootmine muutus ohutusnõuete tõttu keeruliseks. BMW Group Archive’i järgi toodeti seda versiooni üle 2300 eksemplari.
Minu kollektsioonis olev mudelauto on Neo Scale Modelsi toodang.

BMW 2002 Baur Top Cabriolet was one of the most distinctive open-top versions of the BMW 02 Series and an interesting example of cooperation between BMW and the Stuttgart coachbuilder Baur. The convertibles based on the 02 Series occupied a special place in the BMW range, as they offered open-air driving in a model family known above all for its sporty handling and compact body.
The BMW 1600 Cabriolet, bodied by Baur, had created a small but loyal group of open-top BMW customers. On this basis, a full convertible version of the BMW 2002 was also planned. Baur was commissioned to build 200 full convertibles based on the BMW 2002, but increasingly strict safety requirements made such a solution more difficult. As a result, the history of the full convertible version remained very short, and Baur developed a new solution built around a fixed roll-over bar.
Baur’s chief designer Hermann Wenzelburger presented the new roll-over-bar convertible design at the beginning of 1971. In this version, the entire roof was not removed as on a traditional full convertible. Instead, the car used a targa-like construction: a removable roof panel above the front seats, a folding soft-top section at the rear and a fixed roll-over bar in the middle of the body. The rear side windows were also fixed. This solution still offered an open-air driving experience, while helping to preserve better body rigidity and meet the safety expectations of the period.
The BMW 2002 Baur Top Cabriolet did not have the same completely open and visually clean profile as a full convertible, but its unusual construction gave the car a very recognisable appearance. The roll-over bar, removable roof section and folding rear hood made it immediately distinctive. It was a compromise between a sporting coupé, a full convertible and a more practical open-top car, fitting well with the sporty yet usable character of the BMW 2002.
Technically, the model was based on the BMW 2002. It used a 2.0-litre four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 1990 cc, producing 100 hp at 5500 rpm. Power was sent to the rear wheels, and the BMW Group Archive gives the top speed as 170 km/h. In this way, the Baur convertible retained the essential character of the BMW 2002: a light body, rear-wheel drive, a lively engine and a driver-focused feel.
The significance of the BMW 2002 Baur Top Cabriolet lies in the way it kept the idea of an open-top 02 Series alive at a time when producing a full convertible had become difficult due to safety requirements. It was a very special side branch in the story of the 02 Series and is valued today for its rarity, Baur craftsmanship and unusual body construction. According to the BMW Group Archive, more than 2300 examples of this version were produced.
