The BMW 3200 CS Coupé was unveiled to the public at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show and marked the last BMW luxury coupé powered by a V8 engine before the arrival of the brand’s new generation of sedans and sports coupés. It was the first BMW model designed by Carrozzeria Bertone, with the body styled by the renowned Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. This model signaled a significant stylistic shift from BMW’s traditionally conservative design language to a more streamlined and sporty aesthetic.
The car was based on the technical platform of its predecessor, the BMW 3200 S, and featured a 3.2-liter V8 engine that produced approximately 160 horsepower, allowing for a top speed of 190 km/h. It had a four-speed manual transmission and a classic rear-wheel-drive layout. Despite its size, the 3200 CS offered surprisingly refined driving dynamics.
Among its design highlights were the smooth proportions, twin kidney grille, and the signature “Hofmeister kink” in the C-pillar—a design element that would become a defining feature of all future BMW coupés. The interior was luxurious, finished in high-quality leather and wood trim, and was aimed more at comfortable grand touring than outright sportiness.
Production of the BMW 3200 CS Coupé continued until 1965, with only 603 units built, making it a very rare model today. It is regarded as a transitional vehicle that bridged the end of BMW’s V8 era with the beginning of the Neue Klasse sports coupés.
