BMW 1600 Touring (E6) kuulus 02-seeria perekonda ning oli üks BMW esimesi tõsisemaid katseid ühendada sportlik sõiduauto ja praktilisem luukpärakereline kerevorm. Touring tähistas BMW jaoks olulist sammu, sest see viis 02-seeria tavapärasest kaheukselisest sedaanist madalama tagaosa, suure tagaluugi ja parema kasutusmugavusega lahenduseni. 1600 Touring oli selle mudelirea tagasihoidlikum, kuid siiski väga iseloomulik versioon, mis pakkus sama kerget ja juhikeskset olemust nagu teisedki 02-seeria mudelid, kuid praktilisemas vormis. Just see teeb sellest ühe huvitavama kõrvalharu kogu 02-seeria ajaloos.

Jõud kanti tagaratastele neljakäigulise manuaalkäigukasti kaudu, lisavarustusena oli saadaval ka viiekäiguline sportlikum lahendus. Auto vedrustus põhines BMW tolle aja tehniliselt väga heal ülesehitusel: ees kasutati MacPherson-tüüpi vedrustust ja taga sõltumatut tagasilda, mis andsid mudelile hea juhitavuse ja tasakaaluka sõidutunde. 1600 Touringut toodeti suhteliselt lühikest aega ning kokku valmis vaid 4379 eksemplari, mis teeb sellest ühe haruldasema 02-seeria Touring-mudeli.

The BMW 1600 Touring (E6) belonged to the 02 Series family and was one of BMW’s first serious attempts to combine a sporting car with a more practical hatchback-style body. The Touring marked an important step for BMW, as it moved the 02 Series away from the conventional two-door sedan toward a lower rear end, a large tailgate and improved everyday usability. The 1600 Touring was the more modest but still very characteristic version of this line, offering the same light and driver-focused nature as the other 02 Series models, but in a more practical form. It is precisely this that makes it one of the more interesting side branches in the history of the 02 Series.
Technically, the BMW 1600 Touring used the 1.6-litre M10 four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1573 cc and an output of 85 horsepower. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox, while a 5-speed sport-oriented version was available as an option. The suspension was based on BMW’s technically advanced layout of the time: MacPherson struts at the front and an independent rear axle, giving the model good handling and a well-balanced driving feel. The 1600 Touring was produced for a relatively short period, and only 4,379 examples were built, making it one of the rarer Touring models within the 02 Series.
