BMW 320 Baur TopCabriolet (E21) on üks huvitavamaid kõrvalharusid esimese põlvkonna 3. seeria ajaloos. Kui BMW ise pakkus E21 mudelipõlvkonda ainult kaheukselise sedaanina, siis Stuttgartis tegutsenud kereehitaja Baur töötas välja avatud kerevariandi, mida nimetati TopCabriolet’ks. Selle lahenduse eripära seisnes selles, et auto säilitas tugeva tuuleklaamiraami ja keskmise turvakaare, samal ajal kui katuse esiosa ja tagumine osa olid avatavad. Nii ühendas Baur kabrioleti sõiduelamuse suurema keretugevuse ja ohutusega.
Tehiliselt põhines see versioon BMW E21 tavalisel mehaanikal ning Baur pakkus TopCabriolet’d mitme erineva mootoriga, sealhulgas ka 320 versioonina. Just 320 andis sellele mudelile juba selgelt jõulisema iseloomu kui väiksemad neljasilindrilised algvariandid, säilitades samas kompaktse kere ja juhikeskse olemuse, mis olid E21 põlvkonna suurimad tugevused. Bauri TopCabriolet’ tootmine algas 1978. aastal ning kokku valmis esimese 3. seeria põhjal 4595 sellist autot, mis teeb sellest tänapäeval üsna haruldase ja väga iseloomuliku eriversiooni.

The BMW 320 Baur TopCabriolet (E21) is one of the most interesting side branches in the history of the first-generation 3 Series. While BMW itself offered the E21 only as a two-door sedan, the Stuttgart-based coachbuilder Baur developed an open-top version known as the TopCabriolet. Its special character came from the fact that it retained a strong windscreen frame and a central roll bar, while the front roof section and rear part could be opened. In this way, Baur combined much of the open-air feeling of a convertible with greater body rigidity and safety.
Technically, this version was based on the standard BMW E21 mechanical package, and Baur offered the TopCabriolet with several different engine options, including the 320 version. The 320 already gave the car a clearly stronger character than the smaller entry-level variants, while preserving the compact dimensions and driver-focused nature that defined the E21 generation. Production of the Baur TopCabriolet began in 1978, and a total of 4,595 such cars were built on the basis of the first 3 Series, making it a relatively rare and very distinctive special version today.
