BMW M3 Coupé (E36) 1996. aasta versioon tähistas selle mudelirea olulist edasiarendust, millega BMW muutis juba niigi tunnustatud sportkupee veelgi kiiremaks, teravamaks ja kaasaegsemaks. Kui 1992. aasta algne E36 M3 tõi mudeli uude ajastusse, siis uuendatud 3,2-liitrine versioon viis selle sammu võrra edasi. Lisaks tehnilistele muudatustele värskendati ka välimust, mille üheks kergemini äratuntavaks tunnuseks said valged suunatuled. See andis autole värskema ja modernsema ilme ning eristas hilisemat M3 Coupéd varasemast 3,0-liitrisest versioonist. Nii kujunes 1996. aasta M3 Coupést E36 põlvkonna üks kõige küpsemaid ja ihaldusväärsemaid variante.
Tehniliselt kasutas see versioon 3,2-liitrist ridakuues mootorit tähisega S50B32, mille töömaht oli 3201 cm³ ja võimsus ulatus 321 hobujõuni. Võrreldes varasema 3,0-liitrise mudeliga kasvas nii töömaht kui ka võimsus ning E36 M3 sai juurde ka kuuenda käigu, mis rõhutas auto arengut veelgi tõsisemaks sportautoks. 321 hj versiooniga M3 Coupé toodeti BMW Group Classici andmetel kokku 8962 eksemplari ning seda valmistati Regensburgis. Just see uuendatud mootor, täiustatud tehnika ja veidi värskendatud välimus teevad 1996. aasta M3 Coupést ühe E36 M3 perekonna kõige hinnatuma versiooni.

The 1996 BMW M3 Coupé (E36) marked an important further development of the model line, with BMW making its already highly regarded performance coupé even faster, sharper and more modern. While the original 1992 E36 M3 had brought the model into a new era, the updated 3.2-litre version took it one step further. In addition to the technical upgrades, the appearance was also refreshed, with white indicator lenses becoming one of the easiest ways to distinguish the later car. This gave the M3 a fresher and more modern look, clearly separating it from the earlier 3.0-litre version. As a result, the 1996 M3 Coupé became one of the most mature and desirable variants of the entire E36 generation.
Technically, this version used the 3.2-litre inline-six engine known as the S50B32, with a displacement of 3201 cc and an output of 321 horsepower. Compared with the earlier 3.0-litre model, both displacement and power were increased, and the E36 M3 also gained a six-speed gearbox, underlining its development into an even more serious performance car. According to BMW Group Classic, a total of 8,962 examples of the 321 hp M3 Coupé were produced, and all of them were built in Regensburg. It is precisely this updated engine, improved technical package and subtly refreshed appearance that make the 1996 M3 Coupé one of the most highly regarded versions within the E36 M3 family.
