BMW i3 (I01) tähistas BMW jaoks täiesti uue ajastu algust, sest tegemist oli esimese nullist projekteeritud täiselektrilise sõiduautoga, mis jõudis seeriatootmisse. 2013. aastal esitletud i3 ei olnud lihtsalt elektriline versioon mõnest olemasolevast mudelist, vaid täiesti uus kontseptsioon, milles ühendati linnasõiduks sobiv kompaktsus, uuenduslik tehnoloogia ja jätkusuutlikkusele suunatud mõtteviis. Oma erilise proportsiooni, kõrge kere, lühikeste üleulatuvate osade ja väga omanäolise disainiga eristus i3 selgelt kõigist teistest BMW mudelitest ning kujunes kiiresti üheks kõige äratuntavamaks elektriautoks kogu margi ajaloos.
Tehniliselt põhines BMW i3 süsinikkiust reisijatekabiinil, mis paiknes alumiiniumist moodulplatvormi peal. Selline lahendus võimaldas hoida auto korraga kerge, tugeva ja elektrilise jõuallika jaoks väga hästi sobivana. Tagasillale paigaldatud elektrimootor arendas algversioonis 170 hobujõudu ning andis i3-le väga vahetu ja linnas eriti meeldiva sõidutunde. Sõltuvalt mudeliaastast ja versioonist ulatus sõiduulatus umbes 150 kuni 300 kilomeetrini, lisaks pakuti mõnel versioonil ka Range Extenderi lahendust. Ka salongi materjalikasutus rõhutas i3 puhul jätkusuutlikkust, sest kasutati taaskasutatud ja looduslikke materjale. Nii kujunes i3-st mudel, mis ei olnud oluline ainult BMW elektriautode loos, vaid kogu autotööstuse arengus laiemalt.

The BMW i3 (I01) marked the beginning of an entirely new era for BMW, as it was the first fully electric passenger car developed from the ground up to reach series production. Introduced in 2013, the i3 was not simply an electric version of an existing model, but a completely new concept combining compact proportions suited to urban use, innovative technology and a strong focus on sustainability. With its unusual proportions, tall body, short overhangs and highly distinctive design, the i3 stood apart clearly from all other BMW models and quickly became one of the most recognisable electric cars in the marque’s history.
Technically, the BMW i3 was built around a carbon-fibre passenger cell mounted on an aluminium module platform. This solution allowed the car to remain light, strong and especially well suited to an electric powertrain. The rear-mounted electric motor produced 170 horsepower in the original version and gave the i3 a very immediate and enjoyable driving character, especially in urban use. Depending on model year and version, the driving range was approximately 150 to 300 kilometres, and some versions were also available with a Range Extender system. The interior material concept also emphasized sustainability, using recycled and natural materials. In this way, the i3 became an important model not only in the history of BMW electric vehicles, but also in the broader development of the automotive industry.
