BMW M535i (E12) on esimese põlvkonna 5. seeria sportlik tippversioon, mida peetakse üheks varaseks sillaks tavaliste BMW sedaanide ja hilisemate täisvereliste M-mudelite vahel. Mudelit esitleti 1979. aastal ning see tõi E12 mudeliperekonda selgelt jõulisema ja sportlikuma iseloomu. M535i ei olnud veel hilisema M5 otsene vaste tänapäevases mõttes, kuid see kandis juba tugevalt BMW Motorsporti mõjutusi ning näitas, millises suunas BMW sportlikud ärisedaanid edasi liiguvad. Just seetõttu on M535i oluline mudel kogu 5. seeria ja BMW M ajaloo seisukohalt.
Tehniliselt kasutas BMW M535i 3,5-liitrist ridakuue mootorit, mille võimsus ulatus umbes 218 hobujõuni. Võrreldes tavaliste E12 versioonidega eristus see mudel mitte ainult tugevama mootori, vaid ka sportlikuma vedrustuse, aerodünaamiliste lisade ja iseloomuliku välimuse poolest. M535i jäi tootmisse lühikeseks ajaks E12 põlvkonna lõpus ning seda võib pidada üheks mudeliks, mis valmistas ette teed hilisemale BMW M5-le.

The BMW M535i (E12) is the sporting flagship version of the first-generation 5 Series and is widely regarded as an early bridge between regular BMW sedans and the later full-blooded M models. Introduced in 1979, it gave the E12 range a much more powerful and performance-oriented character. The M535i was not yet a direct equivalent of the later M5 in the modern sense, but it already carried strong BMW Motorsport influence and showed the direction in which BMW’s sporting executive sedans were developing. For that reason, it is an important model in the history of both the 5 Series and BMW M.
Technically, the BMW M535i used a 3.5-litre inline-six producing around 218 horsepower. Compared with the regular E12 versions, it stood out not only through its stronger engine but also through sportier suspension tuning, aerodynamic add-ons and a more distinctive appearance. The M535i remained in production only for a short period near the end of the E12 generation and can be seen as one of the key models that prepared the ground for the later BMW M5.
