BMW Z3 M (E36/7) oli Z3 mudelipere kõige sportlikum roadster-versioon ning auto, millega BMW M tõi oma kõrge jõudlusega tehnika väikese kaheistmelise avatud sportauto maailma. Mudel jõudis turule 1997. aastal ning kujutas endast Z3 selget tippversiooni, mille tehniline alus ja iseloom olid tihedalt seotud E36 põlvkonna M3-ga. Võrreldes tavalise Z3-ga eristus Z3 M jõulisema välimuse, laiema rööpme, nelja summutiotsaga ja märksa teravama sõidutunnetuse poolest. See oli mudel, mis näitas, et ka väike roadster võib kanda väga tõsiseltvõetavat BMW M iseloomu.
Tehniliselt kasutas BMW Z3 M 3,2-liitrist ridakuue mootorit. Euroopa varased versioonid said S50 mootori 321 hobujõuga, hilisemad mudelid aga S54 jõuallika, mille võimsus ulatus 325 hobujõuni. Tootmine kestis kuni 2002. aastani ning BMW Group Classicu andmetel toodeti kokku 21 613 Z3 M autot, hõlmates nii roadsteri kui ka coupé versioone. Z3 M tähtsus seisneb selles, et see ühendas klassikalise tagaveolise BMW M tehnika avatud, kerge ja väga juhikeskse sportautoga, luues ühe kõige isikupärasema M-mudeli kogu 1990. aastate lõpu BMW mudelivalikus.

The BMW Z3 M (E36/7) was the most sporting roadster version of the Z3 family and the car with which BMW M brought its high-performance engineering into the world of the small two-seat open sports car. It reached the market in 1997 and represented the clear flagship of the Z3 range, with a technical character closely related to the E36-generation M3. Compared with the regular Z3, the Z3 M stood out through its more aggressive appearance, wider track, quad exhaust layout and much sharper driving feel. It was the model that showed a small roadster could also carry a very serious BMW M character.
Technically, the BMW Z3 M used a 3.2-litre inline-six. Early European versions were powered by the S50 engine with 321 horsepower, while later models received the S54 unit with 325 horsepower. Production continued until 2002, and according to BMW Group Classic a total of 21,613 Z3 M cars were built, covering both roadster and coupé versions. The importance of the Z3 M lies in the way it combined classic rear-wheel-drive BMW M engineering with an open, lightweight and highly driver-focused sports car, creating one of the most distinctive M models in BMW’s late-1990s range.
