BMW 3 Series Sedan (E36) kuulus kolmanda põlvkonna 3. seeria mudeliperre ning tähistas 1990. aastate alguses suurt sammu edasi võrreldes eelkäija E30-ga. E36 jõudis turule 1990. aasta sügisel ning alustas tootmist just neljaukselise sedaanina. Uus mudel tõi kaasa avarama kere, moodsama aerodünaamika, täiustatud turvalisuse ja senisest küpsema juhitavuse, säilitades samal ajal 3. seeriale omase juhikeskse iseloomu. E36 oli mudel, millega BMW viis 3. seeria selgelt moodsamasse ajastusse, ühendades sportlikkuse ja igapäevase kasutatavuse väga tasakaalustatud tervikuks.
Tehniliselt pakuti BMW E36 Sedanit laia mootorivalikuga, alates neljasilindrilistest bensiinimootoritest kuni kuuesilindriliste bensiini- ja diiselversioonideni. Just see lai valik aitas muuta E36 väga oluliseks mudeliks nii BMW müügiedu kui ka margi maine seisukohalt. E36 tähtsus seisneb selles, et see ühendas uue disainikeele, tehnilise arengu ja klassikalise tagaveolise BMW tunnetuse üheks tervikuks, mis mõjutas tugevalt kogu hilisemat 3. seeria arengut.

The BMW 3 Series Sedan (E36) belonged to the third generation of the 3 Series and marked a major step forward in the early 1990s compared with its predecessor, the E30. The E36 reached the market in autumn 1990 and began its career specifically as a four-door sedan. The new model brought a more spacious body, more modern aerodynamics, improved safety and a more mature driving character, while still preserving the driver-focused nature traditionally associated with the 3 Series. The E36 was the model with which BMW moved the 3 Series decisively into a more modern era, combining sportiness and everyday usability in a very balanced package.
Technically, the BMW E36 Sedan was offered with a broad engine range, from four-cylinder petrol engines to six-cylinder petrol and diesel versions. This wide choice helped make the E36 a very important model both for BMW’s sales success and for the brand’s reputation. The significance of the E36 lies in the way it combined a new design language, technical progress and classic rear-wheel-drive BMW character into one package that strongly influenced the later development of the 3 Series.
