BMW 318i Touring (E46) oli mudel, millega BMW tõi 3. seeria universaalkerele omase praktilisuse kokku klassikalise tagaveolise sõidutunnetuse ja ajatu disainiga. 1999. aastal turule jõudnud E46 Touring eristus sedaanist pikema katusejoone, suurema pakiruumi ja mitmekülgsema kasutusvõimaluse poolest, kuid säilitas seejuures väga hästi 3. seeria sportliku ja tasakaaluka iseloomu. 318i oli selles mudelireas oluline versioon, sest pakkus mõistlikku kompromissi igapäevase kasutatavuse, ökonoomsuse ja BMW-le omase sõidunaudingu vahel. E46 Touringut peetakse tänaseni üheks õnnestunumaks BMW universaaliks, kuna see ei mõjunud pelgalt praktilise pereautona, vaid säilitas ka selgelt juhikeskse olemuse.
Tehniliselt jõudis BMW 318i Touring tootmisse esialgu 1,9-liitrise neljasilindrilise M43TÜ mootoriga, mille võimsus oli 118 hobujõudu. Hiljem sai mudel uuema N42 mootori, millel olid nelja klapiga silindripead, Double VANOS ja VALVETRONIC, mis muutsid selle tehniliselt kaasaegsemaks. Kogu E46 Touringu kereversiooni toodeti aastatel 1999–2005 kokku 428 061 eksemplari, mis näitab hästi selle mudeli tähtsust 3. seeria valikus. Just Touring kere, praktiline kasutusväärtus ja BMW-le omane juhitavus tegid sellest mudelist väga hinnatud valiku neile, kes soovisid universaali, kuid ei tahtnud loobuda klassikalise 3. seeria tunnetusest.

The BMW 318i Touring (E46) was the model that combined the practicality of the 3 Series estate body with classic rear-wheel-drive BMW character and timeless design. Introduced in 1999, the E46 Touring differed from the sedan through its longer roofline, larger luggage space and greater versatility, while still preserving the sporty and well-balanced nature that defined the 3 Series. The 318i was an important version within the line-up, offering a sensible balance between everyday usability, efficiency and the characteristic BMW driving experience. To this day, the E46 Touring is regarded as one of BMW’s most successful estate models, because it never felt like just a practical family car, but retained a distinctly driver-focused identity.
Technically, the BMW 318i Touring first entered production with the 1.9-litre four-cylinder M43TÜ engine, producing 118 horsepower. Later, the model received the newer N42 engine with four valves per cylinder, Double VANOS and VALVETRONIC, making it a more advanced package. The E46 Touring body style was produced from 1999 to 2005, with a total of 428,061 examples built, underlining its importance within the 3 Series range. It was precisely the Touring body, practical usability and BMW’s trademark handling that made this model such an attractive choice for buyers who wanted an estate without giving up the classic feel of the 3 Series.
