BMW X5 (E70) oli teise põlvkonna X5 ning mudel, millega BMW viis oma esimese suure SAV-i märksa kaasaegsemasse ja tehniliselt arenenumasse ajastusse. E70 jõudis tootmisse 2006. aastal ning jätkas E53 loodud kontseptsiooni, kuid pakkus rohkem ruumi, kõrgemat turvalisust ja oluliselt moodsamat tehnoloogiat. Selle põlvkonnaga muutus X5 veelgi küpsemaks luksuslikuks maanteekeskseks linnamaasturiks, säilitades samas BMW-le omase juhikeskse iseloomu. E70 oli oluline ka seetõttu, et see tõi X5 mudelivalikusse esimest korda seitsmekohalise istmepaigutuse võimaluse.
Tehniliselt pakuti BMW X5 (E70) väga laia mootorivalikuga, kuhu kuulusid nii kuue- kui kaheksasilindrilised bensiini- ja diiselmootorid. Tootmine toimus peamiselt Spartanburgis Ameerika Ühendriikides ning mudel jäi tootmisse kuni 2013. aastani. E70 tähtsus seisneb selles, et see kinnistas X5 positsiooni BMW X-mudelite perekonna keskse luksusliku SAV-ina ning valmistas ette ka hilisemate kõrge jõudlusega versioonide, sealhulgas X5 M, tuleku.

The BMW X5 (E70) was the second-generation X5 and the model with which BMW brought its first large SAV into a significantly more modern and technically advanced era. The E70 entered production in 2006 and continued the concept established by the E53, but offered more space, greater safety and substantially more modern technology. With this generation, the X5 became an even more mature luxury road-focused SUV while still retaining BMW’s traditional driver-oriented character. The E70 was also important because it introduced the option of a seven-seat layout to the X5 range for the first time.
Technically, the BMW X5 (E70) was offered with a very broad engine range, including six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel units. Production took place mainly in Spartanburg in the United States, and the model remained in production until 2013. The significance of the E70 lies in the way it firmly established the X5 as the central luxury SAV within BMW’s X family and prepared the ground for later high-performance versions, including the X5 M.
