BMW Z3 (E36/7) oli Z-seeria teine mudel ja auto, millega BMW tõi oma kaheistmelise roadster’i kontseptsiooni laiema publikuni. Mudel jõudis turule 1995. aastal ning tähistas BMW jaoks olulist sammu, sest see oli esimene Z-seeria auto, mida toodeti suurtes kogustes. Z3 põhines osaliselt E36 3. seeria tehnilisel alusel, kuid selle lühem kere, klassikaline tagavedu ja avatud kaheistmeline ülesehitus andsid sellele väga selge sportauto iseloomu. Mudel sai kiiresti tuntuks ka tänu filmile GoldenEye, mis aitas selle nime laiemalt avalikkuse ette tuua.
Tehniliselt pakuti BMW Z3 Roadsterit nii nelja- kui kuuesilindriliste bensiinimootoritega ning tootmise jooksul ulatus võimsus 115 hobujõust kuni 231 hobujõuni tavaversioonides. Tootmine algas 1995. aasta septembris BMW Spartanburgi tehases Ameerika Ühendriikides ning roadster jäi tootmisse kuni 2002. aastani. Z3 tähtsus seisneb selles, et see kinnistas Z-mudelite koha BMW mudelivalikus ning pani aluse hilisematele Z3 M, Z4 ja Z4 M mudelitele. BMW Group Classicu järgi esitleti 1998. aastal sama mudelipere baasil ka kupeeversiooni.

The BMW Z3 (E36/7) was the second model in the Z Series and the car that brought BMW’s two-seat roadster concept to a much wider audience. It reached the market in 1995 and marked an important step for BMW, as it was the first Z Series car to be produced in large numbers. The Z3 was partly based on the E36 3 Series platform, but its shorter body, classic rear-wheel-drive layout and open two-seat configuration gave it a very clear sports-car character. The model also became widely known through its appearance in GoldenEye, which helped introduce it to a broader public.
Technically, the BMW Z3 Roadster was offered with both four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, and during its production life output ranged from 115 horsepower to 231 horsepower in the regular versions. Production began in September 1995 at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the United States, and the roadster remained in production until 2002. The significance of the Z3 lies in the way it firmly established the Z models within BMW’s range and laid the foundation for later cars such as the Z3 M, Z4 and Z4 M. BMW Group Classic also notes that a coupé version joined the same model family in 1998.
