BMW 1600 Cabrio oli üks esimesi sõjajärgseid BMW avatud kerega sportlikke sõiduautosid ning tähistas olulist sammu margi naasmisel kabriolettide maailma. Tegemist oli 02-seeria põhjal loodud mudeliga, mis ühendas kompaktse kaheukselise kere, tagaveolise ülesehituse ja BMW-le omase sportliku sõidutunde. 1967. aastal turule jõudnud 1600 Cabrio põhines BMW 1600/2 mudelil, kuid selle kere valmistas koostöös BMW-ga tuntud kerekohandaja Karosserie Baur. Just see koostöö andis mudelile erilise koha BMW ajaloos, sest tegu ei olnud lihtsalt avatud katusega variandiga, vaid hoolikalt ümber töötatud autoga, mille puhul tuli säilitada nii jäikus kui ka juhitavus.
Tehniliselt kasutas BMW 1600 Cabrio 1,6-liitrist M10 neljasilindrilist mootorit töömahuga 1573 cm³, mille võimsus oli 85 hobujõudu. Auto oli varustatud neljakäigulise manuaalkäigukastiga ning klassikalise tagaveoga, pakkudes kerge kaalu ja lühikese teljevahe tõttu väga meeldivat juhitavust. Kabrioleti jaoks tugevdati põhja ja kere olulisi osi, et kompenseerida püsikatuse puudumist, samal ajal kui käsitsi kokkukäiv pehme katus säilitas auto elegantse ja kerge iseloomu. BMW 1600 Cabrio tootmine kestis kuni 1971. aastani ning kokku valmis vaid 1682 eksemplari, mis teeb sellest ühe haruldasema 02-seeria tänavamudeli.

The BMW 1600 Cabrio was one of BMW’s first post-war open-top sporting passenger cars and marked an important step in the brand’s return to the world of convertibles. It was a model based on the 02 Series, combining a compact two-door body, rear-wheel-drive layout and the sporty driving character typical of BMW. Introduced in 1967, the 1600 Cabrio was based on the BMW 1600/2, but its body was built by the well-known coachbuilder Karosserie Baur in cooperation with BMW. It was precisely this collaboration that gave the model a special place in BMW history, because it was not simply an open-roof version, but a carefully reworked car in which body rigidity and handling had to be preserved.
Technically, the BMW 1600 Cabrio used the 1.6-litre M10 four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1573 cc and an output of 85 horsepower. The car was equipped with a 4-speed manual gearbox and classic rear-wheel drive, offering very enjoyable handling thanks to its light weight and short wheelbase. For convertible use, the floorpan and key body sections were reinforced to compensate for the lack of a fixed roof, while the manually folding soft top preserved the car’s elegant and lightweight character. Production of the BMW 1600 Cabrio lasted until 1971, and only 1,682 examples were built, making it one of the rarer road-going models of the 02 Series.
