BMW 2002 Cabrio oli üks kõige haruldasemaid ja omanäolisemaid 02-seeria tänavamudeleid ning tähistas BMW jaoks olulist sammu avatud sportlike kompaktautode maailmas. Kui 1600 Cabrio avas selle suuna 1967. aastal, siis 2002 Cabrio viis sama idee edasi tugevama mootori ja küpsema üldiseloomuga. Tegemist oli mudeliga, mis ühendas 02-seeria kompaktse kaheukselise kere, tagaveolise ülesehituse ja BMW-le omase sportliku sõidutunde avatud kerevormiga. Nii kujunes 2002 Cabriost ühelt poolt elegantne suveauto, teiselt poolt aga väga iseloomukas ja haruldane peatükk kogu 02-seeria ajaloos.
Tehniliselt kasutas BMW 2002 Cabrio 2,0-liitrist M10 neljasilindrilist mootorit töömahuga 1990 cm³, mille võimsus oli 100 hobujõudu. Nagu 1600 Cabrio puhul, valmistas ka selle auto kere Karosserie Baur, mis tähendas põhjalikult tugevdatud konstruktsiooni, käsitsi kokkukäivat pehmet katust ja hoolikalt kohandatud kereehitust. Täis-kabrioletina toodeti 2002 Cabrio’t vaid väga lühikest aega, enne kui ohutusnõuete muutumine viis Targa-tüüpi lahenduse kasutuselevõtuni. Just see teeb varasest 2002 Cabriost eriti haruldase mudeli. Usaldusväärsetel andmetel valmis neid täis-kabriolette vaid 200 eksemplari, mis annab sellele mudelile väga erilise koha BMW sõiduautode ajaloos.

The BMW 2002 Cabrio was one of the rarest and most distinctive road-going models of the 02 Series and marked an important step for BMW in the world of open sporting compact cars. While the 1600 Cabrio had opened this path in 1967, the 2002 Cabrio carried the same idea further with a stronger engine and a more mature overall character. It was a model that combined the compact two-door body, rear-wheel-drive layout and sporty driving feel of the 02 Series with an open-top body style. In this way, the 2002 Cabrio became both an elegant summer car and a very distinctive and rare chapter in the history of the entire 02 Series.
Technically, the BMW 2002 Cabrio used the 2.0-litre M10 four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1990 cc and an output of 100 horsepower. As with the 1600 Cabrio, the body was built by Karosserie Baur, which meant a carefully reinforced structure, a manually folding soft top and a body thoroughly adapted for convertible use. The full convertible version of the 2002 was produced only for a very short time, before changing safety requirements led to the introduction of the later targa-style solution. That is precisely what makes the early 2002 Cabrio such a rare model. According to reliable sources, only 200 examples of the full convertible were built, giving this car a very special place in the history of BMW passenger cars.
