BMW E9 – Large Coupés represents the period in which BMW combined elegance, performance and the prestigious character of a large coupé into one of the most iconic model families in the marque’s history. Introduced in 1968, the E9 generation grew out of the earlier 2000 CS and quickly became one of BMW’s most recognisable and highly regarded coupé series. Long bonnets, a low roofline, frameless side windows and a clean, flowing body gave the E9 models a timelessly sporty and elegant appearance that still sets them apart in BMW history today.
The E9 models reflect very well how BMW succeeded in combining the luxurious character of a grand tourer with the driver-focused feel typical of the brand. This model family included both more elegant and comfortable coupés such as the 2000 CS and more powerful and sporting six-cylinder versions such as the 3.0 CSi. The E9 achieved its greatest fame in motorsport, however, where the 3.0 CSL and its later aerodynamic versions firmly established BMW’s reputation as a builder of top-level touring cars. It was from this context that the Batmobile legend emerged, adding even more character, recognition and racing glory to the E9 story.
