BMW 502 V8 tähistas 1950ndate Saksamaa luksusautode seas olulist verstaposti, olles esimene Saksamaal toodetud seeriamudel, mille kapoti all töötas V8-mootor.
Auto positsioneeris BMW taas Saksa autotööstuse tipuklassi. Tootmist jätkati kuni 1961. aastani ning 502 V8 toodeti kokku 3 117 eksemplari.

The BMW 502 V8 marked an important milestone among German luxury cars of the 1950s, being the first mass-produced vehicle in Germany to feature a V8 engine under the hood. The model was first introduced in 1954 and represented an evolution of the BMW 501, combining the earlier flowing body design with a new and significantly more powerful powertrain. Visually, the 502 retained the elegant silhouette familiar from its predecessor and earned the nickname “Baroque Angel” among the public. However, its interior and technical specifications were substantially more refined and upscale.
The BMW 502 was equipped with an entirely new 2.6-liter V8 engine with an aluminum block, producing 100 horsepower and enabling a top speed of up to 160 km/h—an impressive figure for a luxury sedan in the mid-1950s. The gear lever was mounted on the steering column, the suspension featured torsion bars at the front and leaf springs at the rear, and the overall construction emphasized comfort and smooth driving. The interior included high-quality wood trim, leather upholstery, and chrome accents, all of which highlighted the model’s premium status and its place in the upper class.
The 502 was aimed at wealthier customers, offering strong competition to equivalent Mercedes-Benz models, and later served as the basis for even more powerful versions such as the 502 3.2 Super. This car re-established BMW as a serious contender in the top tier of the German automotive industry. Production continued until 1961, and a total of 3,117 BMW 502 V8 units were manufactured.
