BMW 740d (E38) oli mudel, millega BMW tõi oma luksussedaani maailma ühe väga erilise ja tehniliselt ambitsioonika diiselversiooni. 2000. aasta auto kuulus juba facelifti järgse E38 põlvkonna hulka, mis eristus värskendatud esitulede, tagatulede ja mitmete tehniliste uuendustega. 740d oli oma ajas tähelepanuväärne mudel, sest ühendas 7. seeriale omase väärika välimuse, kõrge sõidumugavuse ja tugeva pöördemomendiga V8-diiselmootori. The BMW 740d (E38) was the model with which BMW introduced a highly distinctive and technically ambitious diesel version into the world of its luxury sedan. A 2000 car already belonged to the facelifted E38 generation, which was distinguished by revised headlights, taillights and several technical updates. The 740d was a remarkable model for its time, combining the dignified appearance and high comfort of the 7 Series with the strong torque of a V8 diesel engine. It was precisely this combination that made it one of the more unusual versions of the E38 generation and showed how BMW could retain its characteristic strength and confidence even in a diesel-powered luxury car.
Technically, the BMW 740d used the 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 diesel engine known as the M67D40. The 2000 version produced 245 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque, making it one of the most impressive diesel-powered luxury sedans of its era. Production of the E38 740d lasted from 1999 to 2001, and the model was built in very limited numbers.
