BMW M5 (E34) on teise põlvkonna M5 ning üks olulisemaid klassikalisi BMW M spordisedaane. Mudel tuli turule 1988. aastal ja viis M5 kontseptsiooni võrreldes eelkäijaga märksa küpsemasse ja tehniliselt arenenumasse vormi. E34 M5 ühendas tagasihoidliku ärisedaani välimuse väga tõsise sõiduvõimekusega ning sellest kujunes kiiresti üks oma ajastu hinnatumaid kiireid neljaukselisi autosid. Samuti oli see viimane M5 põlvkond, mis kasutas edasiarendatud M1 päritolu ridakuue mootorit, mis annab sellele BMW M ajaloos erilise koha.
Tehniliselt kasutas BMW M5 (E34) alguses 3,6-liitrist ridakuut võimsusega 315 hobujõudu, hilisem uuendatud versioon sai 3,8-liitrise mootori ja kuni 340 hobujõudu. Mudeli tootmise jooksul tehti kaks suuremat uuendust ning lisaks sedaanile jõudis alates 1992. aastast valikusse ka M5 Touring. E34 M5 tähtsus seisneb selles, et see ühendas klassikalise kõrgepöördelise ridakuue, käsitöönduslikuma tootmise ja igapäevaselt kasutatava 5. seeria kere üheks väga terviklikuks BMW M mudeliks.

The BMW M5 (E34) is the second-generation M5 and one of the most important classic BMW M sports sedans. Introduced in 1988, it took the M5 concept to a much more mature and technically advanced level than its predecessor. The E34 M5 combined the understated appearance of an executive sedan with genuinely serious performance, and it quickly became one of the most respected high-performance four-door cars of its era. It was also the last M5 generation to use a further-developed version of the M1-derived inline-six, which gives it a special place in BMW M history.
Technically, the BMW M5 (E34) began with a 3.6-litre inline-six producing 315 horsepower, while the later updated version received a 3.8-litre engine with up to 340 horsepower. During its production life, the model underwent two major updates, and from 1992 onward the range also included the M5 Touring. The importance of the E34 M5 lies in the way it combined a high-revving classic inline-six, more hand-built production character and the everyday usability of the 5 Series body into one very complete BMW M car.
