BMW M1 Hommage kuulub nende ideeautode hulka, millega BMW tõi oma ajaloolise pärandi kaasaegsesse võtmesse. Mudelit esitleti 2008. aastal Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este üritusel ning see loodi austusavaldusena algsele BMW M1-le, mille esmaesitlusest möödus sel ajal 30 aastat. Tegemist ei olnud seeriatootmisse mõeldud autoga, vaid disainiuuringuga, mille eesmärk oli näidata, kuidas üks BMW ajaloo kõige ikoonilisemaid sportautosid võiks välja näha 21. sajandi tõlgenduses.
BMW M1 Hommage ühendas oma kujunduses mitmeid viiteid nii algsele M1-le kui ka varasemale BMW Turbole. Auto madal ja lai hoiak, teravad jooned, keskmootoriga sportautole omased proportsioonid ning dramaatiline küljejoon andsid sellele väga jõulise ja futuristliku ilme. Samal ajal oli selge, et tegemist ei olnud pelgalt retrohõngulise harjutusega, vaid teadliku katsega siduda BMW minevik ja tulevik üheks tervikuks. Just seetõttu kujunes M1 Hommage’ist oluline lähtepunkt hilisematele BMW Hommage-mudelitele.
Mudeli tähendus seisneb eelkõige selle disainiloolises rollis. BMW M1 Hommage ei olnud klassikaline tehniline prototüüp, vaid pigem emotsionaalne ja visuaalne manifest, mis näitas, kui tugevalt võib margi ajalugu mõjutada kaasaegset vormikeelt. See aitas taas esile tuua nii algse M1 kui ka BMW sportautode pärandi laiemalt ning kinnistas Hommage-mudelite koha BMW ideeautode ajaloos.

The BMW M1 Hommage belongs to the group of concept cars through which BMW brought its historical heritage into a modern context. The model was presented in 2008 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and was created as a tribute to the original BMW M1, whose debut had taken place 30 years earlier. It was not intended for series production, but rather conceived as a design study whose purpose was to show how one of the most iconic sports cars in BMW history could look in a 21st-century interpretation.
The BMW M1 Hommage combined in its design a number of references to both the original M1 and the earlier BMW Turbo. The car’s low and wide stance, sharp lines, mid-engined sports car proportions and dramatic side profile gave it a very powerful and futuristic appearance. At the same time, it was clear that this was not merely a retro-inspired exercise, but a deliberate attempt to connect BMW’s past and future into a single whole. For this reason, the M1 Hommage became an important starting point for the later BMW Hommage models.
The significance of the model lies above all in its role in design history. The BMW M1 Hommage was not a conventional technical prototype, but rather an emotional and visual manifesto that demonstrated how strongly a brand’s history can influence contemporary design language. It helped bring renewed attention to both the original M1 and BMW’s broader sports car heritage, and firmly established the place of Hommage models in the history of BMW concept cars.
