BMW 320i Gr.2 (E21)

BMW 320i Gr.2 (E21) esindab 3. seeria esimese põlvkonna sportlikumat ja võistluslikumat poolt. BMW E21 jõudis turule 1975. aastal ning oli esimene ametlikult 3. seeria nime kandnud mudelipõlvkond. See asendas 02-seeria ning kandis edasi BMW kompaktse, juhikeskse ja sportliku auto ideed uude ajastusse. Kuigi E21 oli eelkõige seeriaauto, kasutati seda ka võistlusautode alusena ning 1970. aastate teisel poolel ja 1980. aastate alguses nähti E21 põhjal ehitatud autosid erinevates ringraja- ja rallisarjades.
Gr.2 ehk Group 2 viitas rahvusvahelistele turismiautode võistlusreeglitele, mille raames lubati seeriaautodel põhinevaid, kuid oluliselt ümber ehitatud võistlusautosid. Sellised autod erinesid tavalistest tänavaautodest laiemate rattakoobaste, madalama kereasendi, võistlusvedrustuse, turvapuuri, võimsamate mootorite ja aerodünaamiliste lisade poolest. BMW kasutas E21 põlvkonda mitmesugustes võistluslikes arendustes ning selle kerekuju sobis hästi kompaktse ja kerge sportliku auto aluseks.
Käesoleva mudeli puhul tuleb siiski arvestada, et tegemist ei ole kindlalt tuvastatud konkreetse ajaloolise võistlusauto koopiaga. Mudeli alusel on nimeks märgitud BMW E21 Gr.2 ning Alldiecasti kataloogis on sama mudel kirjeldatud kui BMW 320i Gr.2 (E21). Seetõttu on seda kõige õigem käsitleda BMW 320i Gr.2 stiilis E21 võistlusautona, mis esindab selle põlvkonna motorspordist mõjutatud kõrvalharu, mitte tavapärast BMW seeriamudelit.
Sellise mudeli väärtus kollektsioonis seisneb eelkõige selles, et see täiendab E21 põlvkonna lugu teistsuguse nurga alt. Kui tavalised E21 kupeed, sedaanid, kabrioletid ja Touringud näitavad 3. seeria algusaastate seeriaautode arengut, siis Gr.2 stiilis mudel viitab ajastule, mil kompaktsetest BMW-dest ehitati väga silmatorkavaid ja võistluslikke autosid. Lai kere, sportlikud detailid ja madal hoiak annavad sellele mudelile selgelt eristuva koha E21 mudelite reas.

Minu kollektsioonis olev mudel on Neo Scale Modelsi toodang. Tegemist on Model Car Worldile valmistatud eksklusiivse eriväljaandega, mida toodeti piiratud tiraažis kokku 500 eksemplari.

BMW 320i Gr.2 (E21) represents the sportier and more competition-oriented side of the first generation of the BMW 3 Series. The BMW E21 was introduced in 1975 and was the first model generation to officially carry the 3 Series name. It replaced the 02 Series and carried BMW’s idea of a compact, driver-focused and sporty car into a new era. Although the E21 was primarily a production car, it was also used as a basis for competition cars, and in the second half of the 1970s and the early 1980s, E21-based cars appeared in various circuit racing and rally series.
Gr.2, or Group 2, referred to international touring car racing regulations under which production-based cars could be significantly modified for competition use. Such cars differed from ordinary road cars through wider wheel arches, a lower stance, racing suspension, roll cages, more powerful engines and aerodynamic add-ons. BMW used the E21 generation in various competition developments, and its body shape was well suited as the basis for a compact and lightweight sporting car.
In the case of this model, however, it should be noted that it has not been clearly identified as a replica of a specific historic racing car. The base of the model is marked BMW E21 Gr.2, while the same model is described in the Alldiecast catalogue as BMW 320i Gr.2 (E21). For this reason, it is best regarded as a BMW 320i Gr.2-style E21 competition car, representing a motorsport-influenced side branch of this generation rather than a regular BMW production model.
The value of this model in the collection lies mainly in the way it adds another perspective to the story of the E21 generation. While regular E21 coupés, saloons, cabriolets and Tourings show the development of the early 3 Series production cars, this Gr.2-style model points to an era when compact BMWs were transformed into striking and competition-focused machines. The wide body, sporting details and low stance give this model a clearly distinctive place among the E21 models.
