BMW 1600/2 oli mudel, millega algas BMW 02-seeria lugu ning ühtlasi üks tähtsamaid pöördepunkte kogu margi ajaloos. 1966. aastal esitletud kaheukseline sedaan loodi nooremale ja sportlikkust hindavale ostjale, pakkudes kompaktsemat, kergemat ja vahetuma iseloomuga alternatiivi Neue Klasse neljaukselistele mudelitele. Just 1600/2 kaudu jõudis BMW sportlik sõidutunne laiema ostjaskonnani ning sellest mudelist kasvas välja terve 02-seeria, mille mõju on BMW identiteedis tuntav tänaseni. 1966. aasta auto esindab selle arenguloo algust väga selgelt.
Tehniliselt põhines BMW 1600/2 lühendatud Neue Klasse platvormil ning kasutas 1,6-liitrist M10 neljasilindrilist mootorit töömahuga 1573 cm³. Selle võimsus oli 85 hobujõudu ning koos neljakäigulise manuaalkäigukasti ja kerge kerega andis see autole väga hea juhitavuse ja oma klassi kohta veenva jõudluse. BMW Group Classicu andmetel toodeti 1600/2, hilisema nimega 1602, ajavahemikus 1966. aasta märtsist kuni 1975. aasta oktoobrini. Koondandmetes tuuakse 1600/2, 1602 ja 1600 nime all sama mudelirea kogutoodanguks 266 967 autot, mis kinnitab selle mudeli suurt tähtsust 02-seeria kujunemisel.

The BMW 1600/2 was the model that launched the story of the BMW 02 Series and at the same time one of the most important turning points in the history of the marque. Introduced in 1966, the two-door sedan was created for a younger and more sporting-minded buyer, offering a more compact, lighter and more direct alternative to the four-door Neue Klasse models. It was through the 1600/2 that BMW’s sporting driving character reached a wider audience, and from this model grew the entire 02 Series, whose influence can still be felt in BMW’s identity today. A 1966 car represents the very beginning of that story especially clearly.
Technically, the BMW 1600/2 was based on a shortened Neue Klasse platform and used a 1.6-litre M10 four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1573 cc. Its output was 85 horsepower, and together with a 4-speed manual gearbox and light body, this gave the car very good handling and convincing performance for its class. According to BMW Group Classic, the 1600/2, later renamed 1602, was produced from March 1966 until October 1975. Production summaries list the combined total for the 1600/2, 1602 and related 1600 model line at 266,967 cars, underlining its major importance in the formation of the 02 Series.
