BMW M3 Coupé (E46) oli mudel, millega BMW tõi M3 nime tagasi kuuesilindrilise vabalthingava jõuallika juurde ning lõi ühe kogu mudelirea kõige hinnatuma põlvkonna. 2000. aastal esitletud E46 M3 eristus tavalisest 3. seeria Coupést märksa jõulisema välimuse, laiemate poritiibade, nelja väljalaskeotsa ja selgelt sportlikuma hoiaku poolest. Samal ajal säilitas see siiski BMW-le omase tasakaalu, ühendades väga kõrge jõudluse, igapäevase kasutatavuse ja elegantse kupeekere. Just see kombinatsioon on teinud E46 M3-st ühe kõige armastatuma M-mudeli, mida peetakse sageli viimaseks klassikalise mõõdu, vabalthingava mootori ja mehaanilise tunnetusega M3-ks.
Tehniliselt kasutas BMW M3 Coupé 3,2-liitrist ridakuues mootorit tähisega S54B32, mille töömaht oli 3246 cm³ ja võimsus 343 hobujõudu. Jõud kanti tagaratastele kuuekäigulise manuaalkäigukasti või SMG II järjestikkäigukasti kaudu ning auto suutis pakkuda väga teravat ja vahetut sõiduelamust. E46 M3 oli oluline ka selle poolest, et see ühendas rajale sobiva suutlikkuse ja igapäevase kasutatavuse erakordselt terviklikuks paketiks. Kogu E46 M3 Coupé tootmine ulatus 54 750 eksemplarini, mis teeb sellest küll suhteliselt laialt toodetud M3, kuid mitte vähem hinnatud klassiku. Tänapäeval peetakse E46 M3 Coupéd üheks BMW M-divisjoni kõige õnnestunumaks saavutuseks.

The BMW M3 Coupé (E46) was the model that brought the M3 name back to a naturally aspirated inline-six engine and created one of the most highly regarded generations in the model’s history. Introduced in 2000, the E46 M3 stood apart from the regular 3 Series Coupé through its much more muscular appearance, wider fenders, quad exhaust outlets and clearly more aggressive stance. At the same time, it retained BMW’s characteristic balance by combining very high performance, everyday usability and an elegant coupé body. It is precisely this combination that has made the E46 M3 one of the most beloved M cars, often regarded as the last truly classic M3 with compact dimensions, a naturally aspirated engine and a mechanical driving feel.
Technically, the BMW M3 Coupé used the 3.2-litre inline-six engine known as the S54B32, with a displacement of 3246 cc and an output of 343 horsepower. Power was sent to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or the SMG II sequential transmission, and the car delivered a very sharp and direct driving experience. The E46 M3 was also important because it combined track-capable performance and everyday usability into an exceptionally complete package. Total E46 M3 Coupé production reached 54,750 cars, making it a relatively widely produced M3, but no less appreciated as a modern classic. Today, the E46 M3 Coupé is widely regarded as one of BMW M division’s finest achievements.
