BMW 320i Gr.2 Warsteiner DRM 1979 (E21) represents the competition side of the first generation of the BMW 3 Series and is connected with the era of the German DRM series, or Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. The BMW E21 was introduced in 1975 as the first official generation of the 3 Series, replacing the 02 Series and carrying forward BMW’s idea of a compact, driver-focused and sporty car. In addition to production models, the E21 generation was also used in various racing series, where its compact body and rear-wheel-drive architecture made it well suited for touring car development.
DRM was one of the most important German circuit racing series of the 1970s and 1980s, featuring heavily modified touring cars and sporting special versions. E21-based BMWs fitted naturally into this world, as BMW had already built a strong reputation for sporting touring cars with the 02 Series and earlier Neue Klasse models. Cars built to Group 2 regulations differed significantly from ordinary road cars, with widened wheel arches, racing suspension, roll cages, a lower stance and competition-prepared mechanical components.
The BMW 320i Gr.2 Warsteiner DRM 1979 is important in the collection because it shows the E21 generation outside the world of regular production cars. While ordinary E21 models mark the beginning of the 3 Series on the road, Gr.2 racing cars such as this one show how the same generation also lived on the race track. The wide body, Warsteiner livery and DRM connection make this model a strong counterpart to the regular E21 coupés, cabriolets and saloons.
The model in my collection is produced by Neo Scale Models. It is an exclusive edition made for Model Car World and it represents a 1979BMW 320i Gr.2 car with start number 26, in Warsteiner colours and associated with U. Reich. The model was produced in a limited run of 500 pieces.
