BMW 318iS/4 (E36) oli mudel, millega BMW jätkas 1990. aastate keskel oma väga edukat super touring ajastut ning viis E36 põlvkonna 3. seeria ka Jaapani ringrajasarja. Team Schnitzeri valmistatud auto kuulus BMW tehasetoega võistlusprogrammide hulka ning võidusõidunumber 10 seostub selles vormis Steve Soperiga. E36 318iS/4 eristus tavalisest tänavaautost märksa agressiivsema aerodünaamika, laiendatud kere ja puhtalt võidusõiduks kohandatud olemuse poolest, kuid säilitas siiski äratuntava seose E36 3. seeria põhikujuga. Just see kombinatsioon tegi sellest ühe 1990. aastate touring car’i ajastu iseloomulikuma BMW võistlusauto.

Team Schnitzer oli selle ajastu BMW üks tähtsamaid võistluspartnereid ning Steve Soper kuulus BMW touring car’i programmi kõige tuntumate sõitjate hulka. Jaapani sarjas kasutatud number 10 auto esindab hästi seda perioodi, mil BMW E36 oli rahvusvahelises super touring konkurentsis väga nähtav ja edukas.
Minu kollektsioonis olev Minichampsi mudelauto pärineb piiratud tiraažist, kokku toodeti 1824 eksemplari.

The BMW 318iS/4 (E36) was the model with which BMW continued its highly successful super touring era in the mid-1990s and brought the E36-generation 3 Series into Japanese circuit racing. Prepared by Team Schnitzer, the car formed part of BMW’s factory-supported touring car programme, and in this form racing number 10 is associated with Steve Soper. The E36 318iS/4 differed from the regular road car through much more aggressive aerodynamics, widened bodywork and a purpose-built racing character, while still retaining a clear visual link to the standard E36 3 Series. It was precisely this combination that made it one of the most characteristic BMW touring cars of the 1990s.
Technically, the BMW 318iS/4 was based on a four-cylinder E36 racing car built to super touring regulations, with the emphasis placed on low weight, precise handling and high cornering speed. Team Schnitzer was one of BMW’s most important racing partners of the era, and Steve Soper was among the best-known drivers in BMW’s touring car programme. The number 10 car used in Japan represents very well the period when the BMW E36 was highly visible and competitive in international super touring racing.
The Minichamps model car in my collection comes from a limited production run, with 1,824 pieces produced in total.
